Preparing for Meet the Teacher Night isn’t just about decorating your classroom and organizing paperwork. It’s also one of the best opportunities to invite families to become partners in your classroom.
Many families genuinely want to help. They simply need to know what your classroom needs.
Instead of displaying a simple supply list, I like creating an interactive classroom donation display that makes it easy for families to participate.
Why Classroom Donations Matter
There are always classroom supplies that need to be replaced throughout the year.
Items like tissues, glue sticks, crayons, zip-top bags, disinfecting wipes, and dry erase markers disappear much faster than we’d like.
A classroom donation system helps keep these everyday supplies stocked while giving families an easy way to support your classroom.
Make Classroom Donations Interactive
One of my favorite Meet the Teacher traditions was displaying Pencil Pals.
Instead of handing families a printed wish list, each paper pencil is labeled with a classroom supply.
Families simply choose a pencil, take it home, and return it with the requested donation.
As supplies come in, the display naturally changes, making it easy for other families to see what’s still needed.
It’s simple, organized, and much more engaging than a traditional list.
What Should You Ask For?
Keep your classroom donation list focused on the supplies you know you’ll use throughout the year.
Some ideas include:
- Tissues
- Stickers
- Playdough
- Chalk
- Dry erase markers
- Hand sanitizer
- Disinfecting wipes
- Paper towels
- Gallon, quart, sandwich, and snack-size zip-top bags
- Copy paper
- Colored pencils
Choose the items that fit your classroom and your learners.
Where Should You Display Pencil Pals?
The great thing about Pencil Pals is how flexible they are.
You can display them:
- During Meet the Teacher Night
- At Open House
- Near your classroom entrance
- On a bulletin board
- Next to your family folders
- Beside your classroom wish list
Place them somewhere families naturally stop so they don’t miss them.

Pair It with an Amazon Classroom Wish List
While Pencil Pals work perfectly for everyday classroom supplies, I also like offering families an Amazon Classroom Wish List for books, classroom tools, and larger learning materials.
Giving families both options makes it easy for them to choose how they’d like to support your classroom.
For everyday supplies, they can grab a Pencil Pal.
For books and classroom resources, they can simply scan an Amazon QR code and shop whenever it’s convenient.
Complete Your Meet the Teacher Night
Pencil Pals are one of my favorite Meet the Teacher traditions, but they’re just one piece of creating a welcoming and organized evening.
If you’re looking for editable parent forms, family folders, station signs, an Amazon Wish List QR code, teacher pages, student gift tags, welcome slides, and more, my Meet the Teacher Pack includes everything you need to prepare with confidence.
Together, the FREE Pencil Pals resource and the Meet the Teacher Pack make it easy to organize classroom donations while creating a smooth, welcoming experience for families before the first day of school.
