Let’s be honest. Halloween is a fun time of year, but it can also be hard to keep learners’ attention. Right? When I was in the classroom, I wracked my brain on how to keep my students engaged in learning. That’s when I realized that I can combine Halloween and STEM activities! These Halloween STEM activities are a perfect combination to keep your students excited while learning at the same time!

These are not just STEM activities. They are STEAM activities! But what is STEAM??
Science
Cook up some witches potion! It’s all about science with this activity. With a few simple ingredients, your learners have their own potion to take home! (AKA….slime!). While we mix ingredients together, we discuss what each one does in the slime making process. It’s a lot of “I think..” statements, and that’s okay!

After the slime is mixed, we complete our witches cauldron by writing down what we observe using some of our senses (no tasting in this experiment!)
Technology
Kids love anything technology. And this activity will not disappoint! Head to your school computer lab or use iPads for a fun Jack-O-Lantern drawing activity. This activity is perfect for those that hate drawing, but love to create!

Engineering
For this fun engineering activity, students will use a template to build their own small house. Once the basic structure is complete, they’ll get to decorate it and turn it into a spooky haunted house! This hands-on project helps develop problem-solving and fine motor skills as they assemble and design. It’s a great way to introduce young learners to basic engineering concepts while keeping them engaged with a creative twist.

Once everyone is done with their haunted houses, display them somewhere in the school with this fun bulletin board sign!

Art
Pair this fun art activity with this fun book! Skeleton Meets the Mummy is a fun way to integrate literacy with art. Sammy the skeleton is about to head out for trick or treating, but has to take something to his grandmother. While he’s walking through the forest, he encounters some spooky things, especially a mummy! My students loved this book because it has a surprise ending.

It’s the perfect book to pair with an art project. I provide my students with templates and other supplies to create their own mummy and skeletons! Q-tips, cotton, masking tape, etc are perfect supplies to create these!
Math
We end our Halloween STEM activities with math! This one is probably my favorite because I love all the shapes my little learners make. I provide them with black paper, glue and glitter. They create their own spider web including their favorite shape. They trace their webs with glue and sprinkle it with glitter!
