FREE Alphabet Monsters Literacy Activity
Make alphabet practice a little more fun with these FREE Alphabet Monsters for Preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten.
This hands-on literacy activity helps little learners practice three important early reading skills at the same time. Children match uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and beginning-sound pictures to build each set of alphabet monsters.
For example, learners match the uppercase A monster with the lowercase a monster and the picture of an apple. The same matching format continues through the alphabet, giving children repeated practice with letters and sounds.
Use the monster cards during literacy centers, small groups, intervention, morning tubs, or independent practice. Plus, the included follow-up page gives children extra lowercase letter recognition and tracing practice.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
ALPHABET MONSTER MATCHING CARDS
The resource includes alphabet monster cards for letters A-Z.
For each letter, children match:
- Uppercase letter monster
- Lowercase letter monster
- Beginning-sound picture monster
The colorful monster designs make the matches easy to organize while keeping the focus on alphabet skills.
LETTER TRACING ACTIVITY
After matching the cards, children can complete the included alphabet follow-up page.
Learners identify and trace lowercase letters from a-z. As a result, they move from hands-on letter matching to written alphabet practice.

HOW TO USE
First, print and cut apart the alphabet monster cards. For longer use, laminate the pieces before adding them to your literacy centers.
Next, choose how many letters you want children to practice. Beginning learners may work with just a few letter sets at a time. Meanwhile, children who are ready for more of a challenge can match a larger portion of the alphabet.
Have learners match each uppercase letter with its lowercase letter and beginning-sound picture.
Finally, use the tracing page for follow-up practice or a quick check of lowercase letter recognition.
