Meet the Teacher Night is one of the easiest opportunities to invite families to support your classroom.
The key is making it simple.
Over the years, I’ve found that two wish lists work much better than one. Each serves a different purpose, and together they make it easy for families to contribute in whatever way works best for them.
Option 1: Classroom Donation Items
Not every classroom need comes from Amazon.
There are everyday supplies that learners use all year long, and many families are happy to donate if they know what you need.
Some of my classroom staples include:
- Tissues
- Disinfecting wipes
- Hand sanitizer
- Paper towels
- Gallon, quart, sandwich, and snack-size zip bags
- Baby wipes
- Dry erase markers
- Glue sticks
- Crayons
- Colored pencils
- Copy paper
I recommend keeping this list short and specific. Families are much more likely to help when they know exactly what your classroom needs.
Make Classroom Donations Fun
Instead of simply hanging a list on the wall, I like turning classroom donations into an interactive display.
That’s exactly why I created my FREE Pencil Pals Classroom Donations resource.
Families simply choose a pencil labeled with an item your classroom needs and return it with their donation. As items are collected, your display updates naturally, making it easy for families to see what’s still needed while creating a fun way to support your classroom.
Option 2: An Amazon Classroom Wish List
Some classroom needs aren’t things families can easily grab during a quick shopping trip.
That’s where an Amazon Classroom Wish List works perfectly.
Books, classroom tools, flexible seating, STEM materials, and learning resources are often easier to organize through an Amazon Classroom Wish List.
One of my favorite features is using a QR code during Meet the Teacher Night.
Families simply scan the code with their phone, browse your wish list, and purchase only the items they’d like to donate. As items are purchased, your list automatically updates.
It’s convenient for families and much easier to manage than constantly printing updated wish lists.
Why I Use Both
I don’t think it has to be one or the other.
The classroom donation list gives families an easy way to pick up everyday supplies while they’re already shopping.
The Amazon wish list provides another option for classroom materials, books, games, and learning resources that may not be available locally.
Offering both allows families to choose the option that fits their budget and shopping preferences.
Make It Easy for Families
Families genuinely want to support their child’s classroom.
By giving them simple, organized ways to contribute, you’re making it easier for them to partner with you throughout the year.
Whether they bring a box of tissues, grab a donation pencil, or purchase a book from your Amazon Wish List, every contribution helps create a classroom where learners can grow, explore, and succeed.
Everything You Need for Meet the Teacher
A classroom wish list is just one piece of a successful Meet the Teacher Night.
I also like having family folders, editable forms, classroom information pages, station signs, and a classroom slideshow ready before families arrive.
