This time of year is filled with excitement, glitter, and classroom energy that’s hard to contain. One of my favorite quick and memorable Christmas activities is making Magic Reindeer Feed with learners. It’s simple, hands-on, and gives them something special to take home and share with their families on Christmas Eve.
This free printable includes the adorable Magic Reindeer Feed poem and printable labels so you can prep the activity in no time. It’s the perfect mix of fun and literacy…earners get to listen, follow directions, and even practice reading the poem aloud together.
What You’ll Need
You only need a few easy-to-find supplies for this project:
- Oats
- Red and green sugar crystals or sprinkles
- Sandwich or snack-size zip-top bags
- Red and green glitter
- Printed Magic Reindeer Feed labels
(You can find all of these materials, plus fun holiday extras, on my Christmas Amazon List.)
Directions
- Give each learner a small bowl or cup.
- Let them scoop oats and sprinkles to make their “feed.”
- Read or recite the Magic Reindeer Feed poem together.
- Help learners spoon their mixture into the bag, seal it, and attach their label.
When they take it home, families can read the poem again on Christmas Eve and sprinkle the feed outside for Santa’s reindeer to find their way!
Ways to Use This Activity
You can use this as a:
- Literacy tie-in: Practice rhyming words and rhythm while reading the poem.
- Center activity: Add it to your Christmas sensory or writing centers as a read-and-follow-directions task.
- Class gift: Send it home as a special holiday keepsake before winter break.
It’s also a wonderful addition to your Christmas Thematic Unit, which includes literacy, math, and social studies activities that make your classroom festive and meaningful all month long.
